The actor will star in the action sci-fi movie, Transendence. Transcendence is a visually arresting, original science-fiction thriller that explores the concept of identity and morality in the age of artificial intelligence. According to the New Mexico Film Office, the production will employ approximately 250 New Mexico crew members and more than 2,400 New Mexico background and principal talent. Only hours after a new trailer for "Lone Ranger" debuted online last week, the blogosphere flew into a tizzy questioning whether Johnny Depp 's portrayal of Tonto is racist. In the upcoming western, Depp's Tonto -- the sidekick to a masked Texas ranger played by Armie Hammer -- sports face paint and a headdress with a dead raven atop it. Some critics have taken issue with both Depp's costume and the fact that the role was not portrayed by a Native American actor. (For the record, Depp told Entertainment Weekly that in 2011, "I guess I have some Native American somewhere down the line.... Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer launched a new trailer for their film, The Lone Ranger , at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday. The two actors were joined by director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer as they discussed the upcoming flick, which hits theaters on July 3, in front of a group of theater owners. Johnny has been ramping up his appearances as he prepares for the huge promotional push for his latest project. He popped up last month at the Kids' Choice Awards and will undoubtedly have plenty of other appearance opportunities as he heads into the Summer blockbuster season.
