Johnny Depp Curates Pirate-Themed Music Compilation
Forever a rock-star on and off the silver screen, Johnny Depp has been particularly active in music lately. Over the past year, he's performed onstage with Ke$ha and members of The Strokes, Aerosmith, The Black Keys, Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson, holding his own on the six-string. Now we find Captain Jack Sparrow again teaming up with an ensemble cast of A-list musicians for a second installment of the Rogue's Gallery songs-of-the-sea compilation he helped start in 2006.
Working with his Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski and producer Hal Willner, Depp recruited the talents of Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Nick Cave, Sean Lennon, Broken Social Scene and plenty others for the two-disc album Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.

Out Feb. 19 on Anti-, the album features some surprising musical pairings: Depp teams up with Shane MacGowan of The Pogues and Patti Smith on separate tracks, Waits and Richards couple for "Shenandoah," Michael Stipe and Courtney Love pair on "Rio Grande." Frank Zappa, Dr. John and Iggy Pop also make appearances.
Rolling Stone is currently streaming the album's opener, MacGowan, Depp and Verbinski's upbeat take on "Leaving of Liverpool," a tune that dates back to 1885 and has been covered by Bob Dylan, Anita Carter, and the Pogues in the past.

Wilner told Rolling Stone of the album, "It is a very different record than Volume 1. It seems happier -- not as much about torture, sodomy and death."
The original Rogue's Gallery album was released in 2006, inspired by working on the Pirates of the Caribbean set. It featured performances by Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Bono, Van Dyke Parks, Bryan Ferry and others.
