Johnny Depp teams up with The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan for new single

Actor Johnny Depp and The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan have teamed up to record a version of the ballad The Leaving Of Liverpool for an upcoming compilation CD.

The Irish Independent reports on the recording of the tune, which dates all the way back to 1885 when it was reportedly first sung on a ship bound for America. The song has already been recorded by other artists including Bob Dylan, The Dubliners, and even The Pogues.

Depp and MacGowans recording of the tune will be included in the February release of Of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys. The compilation is a foll! ow up to 2006s compilation Rogue's Gallery, which was inspired by the Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest film, which Johnny Depp stars in.

Depp has been a fan of MacGowan and The Pogues for some time, and often attends the bands shows, and spends time with MacGowan. The two even teamed up to record a version of Screamin Jay Hawkins song I Put a Spell on You as a benefit for the earthquake in Haiti. Depp also starred in the music video for MacGowan's That Woman's Got Me Drinking.

MacGowan has no hopes of The Leaving of Liverpool to top this years Christmas most-played lists, but wouldnt mind seeing Fairytale of New York finally claiming the top spot during this, its 25th anniversary year. Despite being dubbed the most played Christmas song, Fairytale of New York has only reached number 2 on the Christmas charts.
