Johnny Depp's Iconic Movie Fashion

Just announced today! Johnny Depp will be honored with the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Generation Award live on Sunday night for his gigantic contribution to the film industry. Eeee! From Edward Scissorhands to Pirates of the Caribbean to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Johnny has been the leading man in some of the most iconic films of all time. During his nearly 30-year long career, he has also sported some of the most show-stopping onscreen ensembles we have ever seen. The makeup in his Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter get-up ALONE is worthy enough of standing ovation, but hey, let's take it alllll back to where it beganwith some curly hair in a popular 1984 flick called A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Character: Glen LantzCostume Design by: Dana LymanThe Look: A young! , fresh- faced Johnny Depp showed off his preppier side in the horror flick by sporting a light blue and white color-blocked polo with a signature permed '80s 'do. Also, THOSE. BROWS.

Cry-Baby (1990)

Character: Cry-BabyCostume Design by: Van SmithThe Look: Johnny Depp played a bad boy sweetheart in an killer '50s Greaser ensemble. He sported a leather motorcycle jacket over a plain white crew neck tee with light wash jeans and motorcycle boots. The most iconic part of this ensemble, though, was that lock of hair he let dangle between his chiseled cheekbones. *fans self*

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Character: Edward ScissorhandsCostume Design by: Colleen AtwoodThe Look: We're sure you've seen this outfit recreated COUNTLESS times around Halloween, but nothing compares to the Colleen Atwood original Johnny wore in the film. The wild black hair, purple-rimmed eyes and pale skin paired with his bondage-like all black ensemble totally reminds us of The Cure, and we ain't mad at that! We give major props to the level of detail put into this outfit (I mean, LOOK at all! those h arnesses and buckles) and to the fact that Colleen made scissor hands look high fashion.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

Character: Gilbert GrapeCostume Design by: Renee Ehrlich KalfusThe Look: Johnny's small-town style reflected a relaxed and carefree working class manhe sported layered strawberry locks and bright button-up striped shirt under a khaki jacket. Also, could that hair any be more reminiscent of early '90s fashion? Perfect.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Character: Raoul DukeCostume Design by: Renee Julie WeissThe Look: Channeling Hunter S. Thompson through a psychedelic lens in the 1970s ain't easy, but Johnny nailed it with his on-point costume design. He wore a perfectly oddball, mostly khaki ensemble accented with accessories like yellow-tinted sunglasses, a bucket hat, bright white ankle socks, and Converse sneakers.

Blow (2001)

Character: George JungCostume Design by: Mark BridgesThe Look: Johnny Depp dips his toes in another round of '70s-era ensembles in the film Blowthis time as a rich drug dealer. He sported flashy platinum aviator sunglasses, a white ribbed turtleneck and a trench coat. He also grew some serious sideburns to complement his combed-back blonde locks. So sleek, so... '70s.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Character: Willy WonkaCostume Design by: Gabriella PescucciThe Look: Johnny plays the coolest (and kookiest) futuristic-meets-'60s-mod candy maker in town by sporting an iconic purple velvet coat that stayed true to the original film. He also wore an updated version of the top hat, cane, and chain, and swapped out the original Willy Wonka giant green bow tie with a sleek silver "W" initial brooch and paisley collar.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Character: Sweeney ToddCostume Design by: Colleen AtwoodThe Look: In his second (of many!) collaborations w! ith Coll een Atwood, Johnny brings back his darker side as a black-haired Sweeney Todd. This time, though, he channels the Victorian era in a tight-fitting double-breasted velvet vest over a billowy white blouse paired with high-waisted pinstripe pants. Also, please note the cutoff fingertip gloves.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Character: Mad HatterCostume Design by: Colleen AtwoodThe Look: So, this is the best costume ever. Sorry, we had to say it because, um, LOOK AT HIM. Colleen completely transformed Johnny (again) for his Mad Matter role in white and hot pink makeup look complete with lime green eyes AND lashes. Amaze. His wild fiery hair peeked out from under a deconstructed top hat paired with an over-sized patterned bow tie and suit coat. *bows down*

Dark Shadows (2012)

Character: Barnabas CollinsCostume Design by: Colleen AtwoodThe Look: Johnny and Colleen teamed up AGAIN for this year's Dark Shadows film, in which Johnny plays an 18th century vampire who re-emerges in 1972. YEP. He sported sharp black bangs with pale skin (duh) and a high-collar shirt under a double-breasted pinstripe suit.

Pirates of the C! aribbean (2003-????)

Character: Captain Jack SparrowCostume Design by: Penny RoseThe Look: Ever since this movie hit theaters in 2003, there's been a continued obsession with seeing Captain Jack Sparrow's beaded dreadlocks and braided goatee on the big screen. Due for their 5th installment of the series next year (with a 6th on the way), we have to say he's making QUITE the fashion legacy in his swash-buckling pirate ensemble. Here he's seen in his signature double-layered brocade coat ensemble paired with multiple belts to hold his weaponry. And, of course, he's never without his tricorne pirate hat and seriously sparkly hand jewelry.
