Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister will make his directorial debut with 'Transcendence'
Johnny Depp is set to star in Transcendence, the new movie from Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister.
Pfister won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on 2010's Inception, while his impressive CV also includes credits on Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and The Prestige. Transcendence will be his first project as director.
The film, scripted by rookie screenwriter Jack Paglen, revolves around a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. It is said to have echoes of Inception and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Pfister's regular collaborator Christopher Nolan is on board as executive producer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp will play a man who gets sucked into the computer, provided Pfister makes several amendments to the existing script. Pfister said: "I'm thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative."
Meanwh! ile, Pfister is said to be eyeing Noomi Rapace as a potential female lead, with James McAvoy and Toby Maguire in contention for the film's other main male part. The potentially stellar cast could be rounded off by Christoph Waltz, who has reportedly been offered a supporting role.
