Johnny Depp wont star in Wes Andersons The Grand Budapest Hotel, but Ralph Fiennes will

This summer, as Wes Anderson fans were still buzzing over the critically praised Moonrise Kingdom, word slowly came out that Anderson was already working on his next project, titled The Grand Budapest Hotel. There were reports that Johnny Depp was already tapped to star, but now it looks like Anderson fans will have to accept Oscar-nominee Ralph Fiennes instead.

Depp looked all but confirmed, but in a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Anderson said that those reports simply werent true.

You know, the Internet has a way of announcing things on its own, he explained. You will find that even though I'm very aware of the cast that has been announced on its own devices, you'll never find me saying who's in the movie. Or, as far as I know, anybody else. I really don't know where it all comes from. In fact, Johnny is somebody who I would love to work with at some point, but he's not going to be in this movie. But I actually have not put the cast out -- I have not announced the cast. We have quite a great cast.

Anderson would confirm that Bill Murray, who has starred in nearly all of Andersons films, will be in it. He is also only referring to the project as Euro and would only say that it takes place in Europe.

Depp will be replaced with Fiennes, who is in talks to join the project, reports Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. This will be a different type of role for Fiennes, who is better known for more sinister parts. He also plays a villain in the James Bond film Skyfall.

Also dropping out is Angela Lansbury, who is still performing onstage in Driving Miss Daisy.

Jude Law and frequent collaborator Owen Wilson are still attached. According to Indiewire, Edward Norton, Willem DaFoe, Adrien Brody and Jeff Goldblum have also been rumored to star.

The Grand Budapest Hotel will start shooting in mid-January.
